Welcome to NZ Nutritionist

A woman is standing outside an old house, leaning on a verandah support.

I’m Sara and NZNutritionist is my passion project and creative outlet.  The things I write about will appeal to people like me: creative and busy people that enjoy eating and want to feel good without restrictive food rules or spending hours in the kitchen.  Diet culture dropouts, I am your people.  NZNutritionist is also for those that aspire to live ‘close to nature’: home gardening, eating local, seasonal recipes, solstice bonfires, deodorant that doesn’t work, all that good stuff.

By profession I am a Registered Nutritionist and my career has spanned public and community health, fitness, private practice, product development, recipe development, food safety, regulatory compliance, blogging and photography (phew!).

I’ve been a blogger since the inception of blogs, sharing healthified recipes, fitness tips, life adventures, my recovery from Binge Eating Disorder and terrible food photographs over on Blogger.  My content has evolved as I have, with the biggest change being a shift of focus from weight loss diets toward sustainable healthy living. I also took some photography courses. In 2017, while in the thick of my masters degree, the opportunity arose to purchase the NZNutritionist.com domain, so I jumped right into the pain of starting a new and more professional blog from scratch.  Enjoy!

Quick Bites..

  • I live in a 115 year old house in Aotearoa New Zealand with my partner and one old-man cat.  Home reno is less of a passion and more of a necessity around here.
  • We live in a city that was almost completely destroyed by earthquakes in 2010 and 2011.  Rebuilding our nervous systems has taken as long as rebuilding the city, but now it’s well underway and it’s like living somewhere new and shiny.
  • I adore animals and would have many, maybe I will in retirement. Expect cat pics regularly.
  • My favourite thing is having a good laugh with friends and family over food and drinks.  I’m also quite the introvert, so this requires some personal admin.
  • While I’m not a vegan or plant-based, most of my recipes are plant-based and vegan-friendly. This is just the way we enjoy eating. Through eating this way I’ve managed to annoy both vegans and carnivore dieters on Instagram.  Turns out, you can’t make everyone happy, but you can make everyone mad at you.  It’s a skill.
  • I’m obsessed with photography but do not enjoy being in front of the lens and always feel so awkward and cringe. I’m working on that, enjoy the cringe!
  • I’m a fledgling gardener, which is embarrassing because my grandfather was a proper horticulturalist. Hopefully those genes will kick in soon.  The photo below is my first kumara harvest, big moment!
